Privacy policy

What data we collect, what we use it for and how you can exercise your rights. Last updated 4 November 2026.

This site, animita.cl, is an independent, non-profit project documenting the animitas of Chile. This policy explains how we handle personal data, in line with Chilean Law No. 19,628 on the protection of private life and the standards of Law No. 21,719, which replaces it.

Who is responsible

The data controller is the person in charge of animita.cl. For any privacy question, write to us using the contact form.

What data we collect

We only collect what is necessary, and most of the site can be used without giving us any data.

If you suggest an animita (“Contribute” form):

  • Information about the animita: name, region, place, coordinates, story, sources and, if you send one, a photograph.
  • Your name and email, both optional.
  • Whether or not you allow us to credit you by name on the entry.

If you write to us (“Contact” form): your name, email and message, so we can reply.

Virtual candles: lighting a candle only adds one to that animita’s counter. Nothing is stored about who lit it. Your browser remembers on your own device (local storage) which candles you lit, so they are not counted twice; you can erase this by clearing the site’s data.

“Animitas near me” and “Use my current location”: your location is only requested if you press the button, and it is used inside your browser. In the atlas it is never sent or stored; in the contribution form, it is only sent if you choose to submit the form with the coordinates.

Technical data: like any website, the hosting service logs technical data about visits (such as IP addresses) to run and protect the site. animita.cl uses no cookies, no analytics and no advertising.

What we use it for

  • Reviewing contributions, asking you for more details if needed and publishing approved animitas.
  • Replying to your messages.
  • Keeping the site running and protecting it from abuse (such as automated submissions).

The legal basis is your consent, given when you submit a form. You can withdraw it at any time by writing to us.

What gets published

From a contribution we only publish information about the animita. We never publish your email. Your name appears on the entry only if you ticked the box allowing it. If you send a photograph, it must be yours or you must have its author’s permission; we publish it with the corresponding credit.

People who have died and their families

Animitas remember real people. We publish historical or publicly known information and avoid details that could hurt their families. We do not publish contributions about recent deaths if we know the family objects.

If an entry refers to a loved one and you want it corrected or removed, write to us: we will give it priority.

Who we share data with

We do not sell or hand over personal data. Only the services needed to run the site are involved:

  • Netlify, Inc. (United States): hosts the site and receives the forms. This involves an international transfer of data to a provider offering contractual data-protection safeguards.
  • Resend (United States): sends the animita.cl team an email notification with the contents of each form received. This also involves an international transfer of data.
  • OpenStreetMap Foundation (United Kingdom): serves the map images. Your browser downloads them directly, so that service receives your IP address.

How long we keep it

  • Contributions: up to 12 months after they are published or declined. Published information about the animita stays on the site.
  • Contact messages: up to 12 months after we reply.

After that we delete them from the forms dashboard.

Your rights

You may ask us at any time to access your data, correct it, delete it, object to its processing, or request its portability or restriction. Write to us using the contact form saying what you need; we will reply within the legal deadlines.

If you feel we have not handled your request properly, you may complain to the competent personal data protection authority.

Minors

The forms are intended for people aged 14 and over. If you are younger, please ask an adult to send the contribution for you.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will publish the new version on this page with its update date.
